Moroccan Hammam Ritual

Kuala Lumpur’s unexpected specialty: the full Maghreb bathhouse sequence — steam, black-soap application, and a vigorous kessa-mitt scrub — in dedicated marble hammam rooms.

What it costs

Kuala Lumpur $40–70 for the full ritual; packages with massage $70–110
United States / Europe $150–300 at hammam spas

What to expect

You steam on heated marble until the skin softens, then an attendant applies olive-based black soap and scrubs the entire body with a kessa mitt — the exfoliation is on par with a Korean seshin. A rhassoul clay application and hair wash often follow, ending with mint tea.

Etiquette & modesty

Disposable underwear provided and worn; sessions are gender-separated with same-gender attendants — comfortable in Malaysia’s modesty-conscious spa culture. Hydrate before; the steam is real. A small direct tip is kind but optional.
