Onsen & Sento Bathing

Japan’s mineral hot-spring baths (onsen) and neighborhood bathhouses (sento): the most refined bathing culture in the world, available in Tokyo for the price of a sandwich.

What it costs

Tokyo sento $4–6 (regulated flat rate)
Tokyo onsen complexes $15–30 entry with towels and lounges
US hot-spring resorts $50–150 for comparable facilities

What to expect

Gender-separated, nude bathing. You wash seated at individual stations — thoroughly, soap and all — before entering the shared mineral pools, which rotate temperatures, jets, and sometimes outdoor rotenburo tubs. Complexes add saunas, cold plunges, restaurants, and nap lounges. Silence is comfortable; the ritual is meditative by design.

Etiquette & modesty

The non-negotiables: wash before soaking; the small towel never touches the water; hair tied up; no swimwear; quiet voices. Tattoos still bar entry at many facilities — search "tattoo-friendly onsen," book a private kashikiri bath, or use cover stickers where allowed. No tipping, ever.
