Ubud, Bali
Open-air treatment rooms over rice terraces, the Balinese massage tradition at its source, and flower-bath rituals that cost less than a hotel-spa pedicure at home.
The short version
Ubud turned wellness into its main industry without losing the thing that made it worth visiting: treatment pavilions open to rice-field air, frangipani on the pillow, and the long, flowing strokes of Balinese massage done by people who learned it at home. The mid-range is the sweet spot — $18–25 for 90 minutes at spas that would photograph like a resort brochure. The signature sequence is a massage followed by a lulur scrub and a flower bath, a two-and-a-half-hour ritual that typically lands around $40–55. Book morning slots; the light through the pavilions is part of the treatment.

Etiquette, tipping & good sense
How it works here
Draping is standard; disposable underwear provided for scrubs and baths. Same-gender therapists on request. Treatments often start with a bell or a moment of quiet — follow the therapist’s lead. Sarongs are appreciated when spas sit near temple compounds.
Tipping
Rp 50,000–100,000 (about $3–7) per treatment is a warm, normal tip; more at length or the luxury tier. Hand it directly to your therapist. Some spas add a 10–15% service-and-tax line — a small direct tip on top is still customary.
Choosing well
Quality is broadly high; the variable is oil and product freshness at the cheapest tier. Mid-range and up, this is one of the safest spa cities anywhere. Book ahead in high season — the famous houses sell out days out.
